Information Management

“Defense networks include more than 7 million IT devices running more than 7,000 major applications. However, systems for finance, personnel, or logistics do not share even the most basic data elements.”

-- Paul Strassman, August 2010
Signal Magazine, “Information Dominance Bows to Network Limitations”

Information You Can Control is Information You Can Use

Like many large organizations, the Department of Defense (DoD) has made it a priority to coalesce its independent networks into an interoperable, secure, and cost-effective system for collecting, processing, and fusing data to produce actionable intelligence and display it in text, graphic, map, or video format.

Using open-source and COTS products, a data-centric design, and leading edge technologies such as service oriented architecture (SOA), FGM develops information management systems and tools to meet the objectives of U.S. military and intelligence communities. We also produce tools used multi-nationally to collect and disseminate geographic information regarding landmine positions, as well as track dual-use and dangerous materials located around the world.

Our Metadata Management Solutions

To realize information dominance, you must first harness its source—metadata. FGM advises customers on an overall data strategy, and then develops metadata management solutions that support that strategy. We successfully developed the DoD Metadata Repository and a related metadata registration process for the collection, storage, and dissemination of structural metadata information resources between the DoD, intelligence community, and NASA.

FGM’s metadata management and governance solutions include:

  • Visibility and understanding of data assets which promotes reuse.
  • Ability of users to define relationships between information resources.
  • Workflow/governance framework that enables communities of interest (COIs) to govern their own metadata.
  • Promotion of common vocabularies across communities.
